About Us

Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children realize their potential and build their futures. We nurture children and strengthen communities. And we couldn't do any of it without you.

Changing perspectives. Changing lives.

Big Brothers Big Sister of the Lowcountry (BBBSL) was founded in February 2019 and opened doors in April 2019.  Operating as an independent 501(c)(3) with its own local Board of Directors, BBBSL serves Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties in South Carolina.  Prior to gaining independence, BBBSL was a program of Carolina Youth Development Center for several decades.

BBBSL is an independent member affiliate of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.  Since 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is incredible potential. As the nation’s largest donor- and volunteer-supported mentoring network,  the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America federation makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 5 through young adulthood in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

We create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

We believe all youth can achieve their full potential.

By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community we are accountable for each child in our program achieving:

• Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships

• Avoidance of risky behaviors

• Educational success
